    Join Hands Day, a national day of volunteering sponsored each year by the American Fraternal Alliance and its member organizations, was observed in early May. Hermann Sons lodges throughout the state made monetary donations to charities, collected items for food pantries, cleaned cemeteries, held fund-raisers and more.

    The small town of West was dealt a heavy blow on the night of April 17 when the local fertilizer plant exploded killing 14 people, injuring 200 and destroying or damaging as many as 140 homes.
